Applying for a Teen Driving Permit in Texas

In Texas, a Learner License to drive, allows a beginning driver to operate a vehicle with someone in the front that is 21+ years old and hold a valid license. Following are the requirements for a Driving Permit in the state, according wtith the DPS -Texas Departament of Public Safety:

  • The minimum legal driving age in Texas is 15 years old.
  • Applicants must apply in person at the Texas Driver License Office and present a valid proof of your Texas residency.
  • Applicants must present documents in order to verify the status as U.S citizen or have a lawful presence. The information required includes proof of the Social Security Number and your birth certificate (original or certified copy). Additional documents and certificates may be required to verify incomplete names, date of birth and conflicting information.
  • Applicants must fill and complete the Application for Driver License or Identification Card. You can print this form at home, fill it and bring it to the office or you can ask for a printed form and fill it at the office.
  • Teen Drivers (under 18) must present the education completion certificate. All applicants who have a learner's license or a provisional (full class) driver license will have required to submit the completion certificate OR present a Parental Driver Education Affidavit (DL-90A) and Classroom Instruction and Behind-the-Wheel Record (DL-91A and DL-91B) for parent taught driver education driver only.
  • Applicants must submit a Verification of Enrollment and Attendance (VOE) form or a letter from the school administrator.
  • Applicants must obtain parental authorization. If Parent Taught Driver Education was completed, parent must be present to sign at the office.
  • Applicants must pass the Texas Driving Exams (written and road test).
  • Applicants must pass a vision examination.
  • Applicants must consent to be fingerprinted and photographed. Also, the applicant must sign at the time of application.
  • Applicant must pay the required fees.

Texas Driver's License: How to Pass the Written Test

The Driver's license written test in Texas has two parts: the first part is the Road Rules test and applicants will take the rules test class C. The second part is the Signs Test and applicants must know and understand all the different traffic and highway signs used in Texas and USA.

1. RULES TEST: Applicants should distinguish between the different TEXAS laws regarding alcohol related laws, liability insurance laws, implied consent laws and right of pedestrians. They must know the penalties related with these laws, if any are violated. Applicants must be familiar with the steps involved normal driving procedures as changing lanes, parking, distances, right of way and different rules regarding speed limits, driving in highway, etc. They also must identify the proper procedure to following, in case of accident and emergencies.

2. SIGN TEST: Applicants should be able to recognize and act according to the different traffic signals used in Texas and USA.They must to know and differentiate the meaning of the sharps and the colors of the signs found in Texas.(there are signs to inform, signs for guide, sign that warn of hazards and signs to regulate traffic). Also, applicants must understand the proper use of the pavement markings on streets and highways and know what to do and what the driver is allow to doing.
